Kiishik

This collection of books, videos, pamphlets and posters is an on-going project compiled by KIISHIK. The information available concerns the Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island (North America). There are important books on the history, culture, language, arts, etc. Of particular interest on display at the library is a unique stylized heritage map of Northwestern Ontario. Names of places are given the names used for hundreds of years by the Caribou Clan of the Anishinaape People. Historical details going back thousands of years are included on the map.

Teachers are especially encouraged to familiarize themselves to this collection for classroom use.

The KIISHIK Foundation is a foundation supported by Linda Lundstrom to enable the residents of the Red Lake area to conduct Native Awareness activities in the community. KIISHIK will pay the necessary expenses to bring Aboriginal artists storytellers, craftsmen, etc. to the libraries, classrooms, and community events to share their language, art, skills, and knowledge. The name KIISHIK means, "light" in the Anishinaape language. It is also the surname of many of the original inhabitants of the Red Lake area, descendants of Kiishik, or Sam Keesic. The KIISHIK Fund was created to shed light, to enlighten, and the collection at the Red Lake Public Library is a part of this effort.
